Are you aware of your digital footprint? What does your digital footprint say about you? Some of our grade five classes had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Scott Stephen, a historian from Parks Canada, on Friday morning. The students had a number of questions for him about the fur trade, and he was able to provide some pretty amazing answers. Thank you very much Dr. Stephen for visiting our school and for making our inquiry into the fur trade much more meaningful!
I couldn't believe this when I read it. Apparently, scientists in Russia have been able to grow a flowering plant from some 30,000 year old frozen seeds. The story can be found here. Mon, Feb 20, 2012 Thank you to our School Resource Officer, Constable Chris Saint Cyr for spending time at our school on February 14th. Constable Saint Cyr helped us celebrate ''I Love to Read'' month by reading to our students in the library for part of the morning. We appreciate your time very much! We also held an ''I Love to Read'' draw this week. In order to enter, students had to listen to a passage from a mystery book over the morning announcements. If they could guess what book the passage came from, they were able to enter the draw. This afternoon we drew four names, and the winners were able to choose a prize from a selection of new books. Congratulations to the four winners!
We're setting up a small fish tank in the library. Come check it out and watch for the fish's arrival in the near future.
As a school, we subscribe to The Winnipeg Free Press online edition, but we occasionally get requests for paper copies. If you happen to get the newspaper at home, and they are just sitting in a pile until recycling day, we would appreciate it if you would donate them to the school. They can be sent in with students, and dropped off at the library.
Thank you! If you would like to try listening to your next book as you read along, come to the library and see what's available in the audio book display. Yes, you can sign them out!
Google SafeSearch for Kids filters out results to make them more kid friendly. Parents can change the settings to make them more or less strict, and can block some websites from coming up at all.
Thanks to all of you who came out and supported the school book fair. Because of your support, we were able to earn many new books for our school library. Watch the Library Information page to see the new additions as they are added to our collection. A huge thank you to the students and parents who helped out! We really appreciated it.
Enjoy reading those books over the holidays. :) Whether you are writing a paper, making poster, or filming a video, you should demonstrate good citizenship skills if you are referencing, or using work created by another person. Click below to watch a video from Common Sense Media about respecting a Creator's Rights. Here is a related worksheet to encourage discussion, also from Common Sense Media.Book fair flyers have been given to your homeroom teachers, and should go home today or tomorrow. If you happen to lose it, here is a link to an electronic version.
It takes a minute to load..... HGI students, along with Mr. Dolinski and Mr. Seguin created an anti-bullying video, entered the Hot 103, Stand and Speak Out About Bullying Contest, and won! Congratulations to everyone involved. : ) More details are available on the Hot 103 Website. You can watch the video below. If writing is your thing, you might want to check out these writing contests. The first is open to students from Grade 4-6, and is called the Write to Read Contest. The second writing contest is the Book Week 2012 Writing Contest for Kids & Teens. The Canadian Children’s Book Centre is running a Writing Contest for Kids & Teens in celebration of TD Canadian Children’s Book Week 2012 (May 5 – 12, 2012). The contest is open to students in Grades 4 to 12. One winner from each grade will receive a $250 gift certificate to the bookstore of his or her choice! Deadline for entries is February 1, 2012. More details are available here. The information flyer and application forms are below. Can't figure out how much to spend on each person for gifts this year? Check out this video. How's that for practical math?!? You can read GeekDad's post about it here as well.
This will put you in a festive mood. An Oak Park High School student is responsible for this gem! He recorded all the music and put the video together. It isn't always easy to know when you are looking at inaccurate information on the internet. Students at HGI are learning about how to tell the good websites from the bad, and they would like to share that information with you. Keep watching for student work with tips on how to tell if the websites you visit are trustworthy. This poster was created by students from 5 McKie.
The Grade 9's are planning a mitten drive for Westgrove Elementary. They would like to provide each student from Kindergarten to Grade 6 with a nice pair of warm mittens for the winter. The donated mitts can be dropped of at the office. Thanks in advance for your generosity.
The Book Fair is Coming! Dec 15th between 3:30 and 8:30 pm. Dec 16th (tri conf day) between 9-4 pm. Find book more book preview videos here.
